The API is not open yet. It opens once the matching behind it is solid enough for other people's tools to lean on.
GGG's API hands you an item as structured JSON. This turns it back into the text the game copies, with advanced mod descriptions, which is the format most Path of Exile tools already know how to read.
It is the same code the character planner imports run on, so it gets tested against real characters long before anyone else builds on it. If you want it to return something it doesn't, say so now while the shape is still up for grabs.
